Our processes and products adhere to REACH norms

What is sustainability?

The “Our Common Future” report, published by the World Commission on Environment and Development, defines sustainable development as meeting the needs of the present without compromising the needs of future generations.

The present generation of consumers worldwide demands more environmentally friendly and ethically sourced/manufactured products. This naturally includes the leather industry.

At MGM Enterprises, we care about our environmental footprint. Our processes and products adhere to REACH norms.

We manufacture and export finished leather and leather products globally. Our focus on quality and innovation is matched by our responsibility to the planet and the well-being of our community.

With growing focus on sustainability in fashion worldwide, the leather industry is fast moving towards more robust environmental standards, committed to becoming carbon neutral in the coming years.

Leading the global industry clean-up is the Leather Working Group (LWG), a third-party auditor that inspects tanneries, gives them a rating from bronze to gold and keeps upgrading the environmental standards for leather-making.

At MGM Enterprises, we acknowledge the importance of having a responsible industry at large and our company in particular and have chosen to collaborate with LWG certified companies. To create a socially and environmentally sustainable leather value chain together is central to our philosophy.

Leather Sustainability Criteria

United Nations Industrial Development Organization’s (UNIDO) “Framework for Sustainable Leather Manufacture” report defines the following areas of focus when considering leather sustainability:

  • Resources (hides/skins, chemicals, water, energy)
  • Emissions generated during the production process (solid, liquid and gaseous wastes)
  • Quality and appeal of the final product, durability
  • Product use after end-of-life

Right across the supply chain, responsible manufacturing practices should aim to reduce the amount of energy, water, and chemicals used during production and reduce the amount of solid waste, wastewater, and air emissions.

And responsible leather manufacturers turn to certifications by agencies such as the Leather Working Group (LWG) to demonstrate their commitment to sustainable practices. The LWG’s audit standard covers many elements of leather manufacturing, including water use, energy consumption, chemical management, disposal of solid waste, effluent treatment, and management of air and noise emissions. The audit standards are being upgraded regularly and also becoming more holistic.

Innovation drives sustainability

With sustainability becoming an increasingly crucial issue in the leather industry, future-oriented leather production companies must bring economic interests, ecological soundness, and consumer benefit into line. Achieving this balance is now more crucial than ever.

The global leather industry has made significant steps concerning environmental matters. In the manufacturing stages, a high level of innovation and quality control ensures that the best use is made of hides and skins and the chemicals required to convert into leather. Overall, chemical and water use has thus been reduced, reducing the level of waste after treatment.

At MGM Enterprises, we are vigilant about  sustainable development practices along the entire supply chain.

  • We use innovative new products and chemical systems whose components are primarily  renewable raw materials and which do not use any substances with critical toxicological properties
  •  Eco-friendly processes by reducing energy and water requirements, making more efficient use of chemicals and finding new ways of using by-products
  •  Augment leather properties in terms of sustainability during and after use: longer service life, low leather consumption and good recycling possibilities

Our company’s policy is to collaborate with LWG certified entities and to adhere to REACH norms at all times.

Leather, a sustainable material

Leather is a sustainable product by origin because it a by-product from the meat industry. The leather industry is creating unique material from hides/skins that would have gone to the landfills creating even more ecological problems. Leather is, therefore, recycled material and a durable one.

With the right chemicals, processes and innovations, the leather industry can take giant steps in reducing its carbon footprint.

At MGM Enterprises, we use the right kind of branded dyes and chemicals and use them efficiently. We minimize waste and effluents to not only reduce operating costs but as a sustainable practice. Our company also makes optimal use of raw materials to reduce the amount of inputs ending up as waste. We always aim to comply with REACH norms.

MGM Enterprises is a proud supporter and collaborator with global standards to create a leather value chain that is as sustainable as possible.

Leather, Sustainability markers and the value it brings

By its very nature (made from a by-product of another industry), leather is a sustainable product. It is long-lasting, reusable and recyclable. Its remarkable features are:

Good leather ages well and lasts

Well-made leather lasts a long time and gets better with age, acquiring a depth of patina and wear pattern that is individual to the user.

Leather is easy to repair and maintain

Leather needs very little in the way of lifetime maintenance and it easy to do at home. It does not draw heavily on resources for laundering and drying.

Leather and leather by-products can be recycled

Leather trimmings from the manufacturing process can be repurposed as stuffing or combined with other materials to make composite products such as leatherboard, which is used for insoles and heel inserts in footwear.

Leather has many varied end uses

Leather can be engineered to be durable enough for furniture yet soft enough for comfort footwear. It will make the finest dress gloves or protective, abrasion-resistant motorcycling gloves. Leather makes the most supple of jackets or the firmest of walking boots.

Leather has a natural comfort

Leather has a ‘breathability’ that more easily allows body temperature to be regulated; it will naturally absorb and hold moisture away from the skin until it can evaporate to the outside.

Leather is naturally beautiful

Leather has a natural beauty that, unlike many materials, improves with age. Although every hide or skin is different, leather manufacturers work to bring out its best qualities.

Leather adds luxury

Leather has long been a component of luxury goods, from covetable handbags to footwear and clothing. It has a distinctive touch and wears quality that cannot be replicated.

We are one of India's leading exporters of finished leather with a focus on manufacturing high quality products. Our finished leather and leather products are available globally.
